And looking around the world, one realises that most of the sufferings of mankind are mostly due to food. Before financial boom in India, relative proportion of life style disorders were much lesser than now. As per WHO Non-communicable diseases (NCD) are estimated to account for 53% of all deaths in India. It means that 53 people out of 100 in India are dying of life style disorders that includes hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, cancer etc . Further, prevalence percentage (2008) of hypertension is 32.5% and raised cholesterol is prevalent in 27.1% of population. These numbers are enough to demonstrate dismal state of health maintenance in India. Since urbanisation, we have witnessed mass migration of rural population towards metros. Probably, this is also one of the causes of increasing life style disorders for the reason of adopting cheaper foods for sustaining life and compromising on the nutritional aspect of the diet. Migrating youth generally does not get an access to the home made food and relies on street food, cheaper mess diet and consumes trans fatty acids in excess. By the time this generations gets settled, side effects of unhealthy food habits already are grouted. This could be one of the reasons why risk of Coronary Artery Disease is much higher in India in early 40’s of the age.

It is relevant to understand that when it comes to life style diseases, food is considered to be the primordial culprit as a root cause. Although it is one of the reasons but cannot be considered as the only ghost, in fact it is not the ghost. As it is evident from the quote above, “The food which is gratifying to sensory experience (colour, smell, taste, and touch), cooked and consumed as per standardised guidelines, is called as life”. It essentially sustains life of living beings. It is a comprehensive definition and also negates the false believes about food. Food definitely is not bad, but the method of cooking and consuming are bad that result into undesired effects of food when these habits are practiced over a prolonged period. It is already known and believed that if food is consumed in appropriate dosage it works like a medicine. And those who realised the fact stated, “Let food be your medicine”. In traditional and indigenous system of Medicines-Ayurveda food in fact is used as a medicine. It comprehensively teaches about food and methods of consumption which is essential to sustain healthy life. As per Ayurveda, contrary to common belief and teaching, dosage of food cannot be standardised. Also, to sustain a healthy life only balanced consumption is not going to help. Selection of food, it's processing, consumer, and rules of consumption are essential components to get maximum benefits of food. Therefore ‘eight rules of food consumption’ is an essential tool of healthy living. It includes Natural Qualities (of food/of consumer), Processing, Time (Seasonal/Age), Geographical conditions, Combinations of food, Quantity of food, Rules of consumption, and Consumer. In Ayurveda dietary planning is not limited upto standardised calorific consumption of food. This standardisation is also, in my opinion, is one of the reasons of increasing life style disorders in urban rich population. Because we have failed to educate the mass that standard prescription of 2600 Kcal of diet is meant for those who are engaged in heavy labour. And calorific prescription of food also changes with the kind of life style we live. Ironically, those who need 2600 Kcal of food do not have an access to the food and those who do not need it has an access in excess.

Since Ayurveda believes that dosage of the food is proportionate to the digestive capacity of an individual, it is difficult for the second person to decide the appropriate dosage of food. Therefore, an individual only can decide how much food should be consumed by him/her. But we witness the subject being confused about the quantity of food to be consumed voluntarily and continues to complain of hunger if following a specified diet plan. One needs to be educated properly that stomach is an elastic organ and its size tends to increase over the period of time if constantly given large amounts of food. On the other hand, it may also shrink if served measured quantities and given the condition that one trains itself mentally to sustain hunger pangs during the period of dieting for some time. Now even research has established that intermittent fasting turns out to be good for health. As per Mark Mattson, ‘You probably know that too many calories aren’t good for your waistline, but as it turns out, they aren't good for your brain either’. Mark Mattson is a professor of neurosciences in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicines and is working on effects of fasting to ward off neurodegenerative diseases. As a principle, Ayurveda categorises diseases into two groups — due to over nourishment and due to malnutrition. Life style disorders are categorically mentioned under diseases of over nourishment. And treatment to such disorders is Apatarpan or Langhan which is synonymous to fasting. Fasting does not necessarily mean abstinence from food, however, it is a judicious permutation and combination of multiple activities that restore health. It entirely depends upon an individual to find the most suitable form of fasting and seek help from the professionals to decide the approach to follow the same. The easiest methodology is taught and practiced in traditional Indian Culture in which people are made to fast on religious grounds as an offering to their choice of deity. The science behind it is to restore the primordial deity of the body — digestive system.

Another aspect relating to food which is absolutely essential but mostly ignored — ‘one should never eat unless the previously eaten food is completely digested’. It is one of the most common practices we observe in daily living. People tend to eat back to back unaware of the fact whether previous meal is digested or not. Indigested food when gets mixed with fresh supply, it results into fermentation of the whole mix and becomes very slow acting and quotes mucosal lining of the digestive system. Further, it leads to poor absorption of digestive juices and impairs nutrition. It is called as Ama - Toxin in Ayurveda. How does one understand if previously eaten food is digested or not? Simplest methodology, when you feel hungry, drink a cup of tea like hot water sip by sip. It will induce burp. If in the burp, taste relating to previously consumed food still appreciated, it is not the appropriate time to eat and one shall allow this remedial hot water to digest the food. Once the food is digested, eat relatively lighter meal at next meal time. This method not only restores digestive enzymes but allows the system to deplete the glucose stored in liver in form of glycogen. Once the glycogen is depleted, body starts burning fats which gets converted into ketone bodies which is used as energy. This small and intermittent phase of fasting may also help in clearing cholesterol from the arteries, if practiced judiciously.

Globalisation has made the world small. Although, it played an important role in technology exchange and the benefits of knowledge exchange are immense, but it also is among the reasons responsible for life style disorders. Impact on eating habits of people in today’s era after globalisation is, ‘Stay locally and eat globally’. Ayurveda resorts that one should eat according to the place. Native land grows food appropriate to the climate and it suits by default to the natives. It is wise to use coconut oil for cooking in southern India while mustard oil cooking is appropriate to northern. Eat local is the key to health and not only local but eat seasonal. Seasonal food locally grown as per the natural selection becomes suitable naturally and does not hinder with the health. Seasonal native vegetables grow as per the environmental conditions and provide properties needed to sustain in that particular season. Mustard grows in winter which is heating in nature and it is one of the major crops of northern India. Eating food that is not native to own’s country does not prove to be healthier option unless you have a super powerful digestive system. The wisdom says, eat consciously and the conscious eating is all about making justified choices when it comes to deciding food.

Food that sustains life cannot be termed as bad. At the same time excessive, unplanned and unhealthy eating definitely does not sustain health. And, health is an individualistic issue and must not be compromised for lame excuses. Quantity of food should be relative to digestion, quality of food should be relative to working routine of an individual, nature of food should be relative to season and one should be aware of the staple dietary habits. Diet, however, is a subjective issue but this piece of information lays a foundation of conscious eating that may help those who are health aware.

In the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Lord Krishna expounded the wisdom of all the times to his great disciple Arjuna. Probably this was the first time when utility of Yoga for overall development of life was explained on a public platform. Lord Krishna says, “O Arjuna! Perform your actions by achieving the complete communion with the objective.” Unless you achieve the state of oneness with your objective, you can never achieve the desired result.

The word Yoga is a self-explanatory Sanskrit word derived from the root Yuj that means to unite. It also signifies addition of two subjects’ viz. 1+1 = 2. When two different numbers combine together they lose their own entity to become 2, which in turn is a transformation.

Acharya Patanjali – expounder of Yoga Darshana says,

योगश्चित्तवृत्ति निरोधः

Yoga is a way to control thy mind from its distractions – vritti. As per Ayurveda the gross human body is a balanced communion of Physical Body, Senses, Mind, and Soul. Mind is like a central processing unit of the physical and physiological body. And characters of mind are explained as atomic, and one. Because of its atomic nature it connects to various subjects in a split of a moment. And this very nature of the mind makes it highly instable thus resulting in constant attraction and distraction from its subject. It cannot remain focused on one subject for a long duration if not constantly trained otherwise. The great seer Patanjali knew this nature of mind that posed a major hindrance to the true wisdom of life leading to complete chaos. A practice was devised to attain the control of mind with a constant effort named as Yoga.

Lord Krishna- an epitome of Yoga philosophy gave brilliant definition of Yoga,

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">...... समत्वं योग उच्यते II <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: normal;">भगवद्गीता २/ ४८

To achieve the equality is Yoga. However, this particular definition of yoga by Lord Krishna can be read in various aspects. It is very versatile in its explanation. An effort by an individual to achieve equality to that of divine by its constant actions similar to the actions of divine can be done with the help of Yoga. It can be done by different ways viz. by following the path treaded by divine, by surrendering to the actions of divine, by constantly reciting the praise of divinity and so on. All the roads lead to communion with the divine or in other words, toting with the divine to be transformed is yoga in true words. To become divine by mind, actions, and speech is Yoga.

Lord Krishna further expounds,

बुद्धियुक्तो जहाति इह उभे सुकृतदुष्कृते I

तस्मात् युज्यस्व योगः कर्मसु कौशलम् II भगवद्गीता/ २ – ५०

The one who constantly engages himself with intellect and wisdom achieves detachment (salvation) in both the realms – physical and metaphysical. That is why one shall dedicate the self to the Yoga, because achieving perfection in the action is Yoga.

Brilliance of the Yoga is explained in above definition and simplicity of yogic practice is explained without complexity of the process. To achieve the perfection in the current endeavour with constant efforts and focus is the true meaning of practicing yoga. Practicing Karma (action) to an extent that action and the individual become identical. There remains no difference between them and they achieve similarity or become synonymous to each other is true yoga.

Yoga philosophy is adaptable and transforms itself with time, orientation and generations. Probably that is one reason why it is so popular till date since the time immemorial. However, due to the commercialisation yoga is broken down in many forms and marketed in different colours and packaging. The most popular form of yoga practiced today is Asana (postural practice). Practicing certain forms of postures is not yoga but a fragmentary part of it. It can help the one to achieve physical flexibility or strength but can never lead the one to the true meaning of the Yoga – a complete communion with the self. It is essential to comment here that it is not wrong to practice Yogic postures to achieve flexibility and strength because it is still effective but practicing fragmentary aspect of the science thinking that we are practicing Yoga is wrong.

To achieve the homeostasis between Mind, body and soul with a constant effort to enhance the intellect, constant practice to achieve perfection in own actions and a complete devotion towards the objective is the true form yoga. Any other practice of yoga can be fragmentary, fractured part of yoga but can never be a complete science.

It is just awe-inspiring seeing colours in the air and being in the hills the beginning of the madness could be felt well in advance- pine trees start shedding pollens and you can see tinge yellow layer on your vehicles parked in open. This is how for past few years I have been assuming on-coming Holi festival. The rush in the blood, madness in the air, and happiness all over inspire me about this festival and infuses loads of peace and serenity in the end. To be an Ayurvedic Physician have been the best thing in my life – I guess! It gives me an insight and connects me not only to the roots of Indian tradition but opens my mind to know and learn about other traditions as well. This time Holi left me with few questions. Why should I play Holi and is it only about fun or there is a bit more relevance to the festival of colours?
“Festival of colours - Holi” is celebrated in India on the eve of full moon of Falgun – Indian name for spring. It is the celebration of victory of the Truth over evil. It marks the beginning of the annual fairs and first trading get to gather. On the day of the Holi people gather in large number of groups and paint each other in multiple colours. Primarily the compassion is expressed by pouring water or coloured water on each other. My mind goes a mile to find a technical reason behind playing with colours, although organising fairs make sense as the Falgun is the time when officially cold wave begins to slow down and rise in temperature makes it easy to go out and make living, which had been made tough otherwise by severe cold wave.
· Holi is primarily played with water or coloured water. Out of the five elements of evolution, the water is responsible for union or bonding. The molecules of water have the property to unite loosely held particles together- everyone knows how it turns flour into dough. It represents compassion and love. Splashing water on each other marks the unity and oneness.
Also, during extreme winters people used to shirk bathing. During the winters skin becomes dry and dehydrated in lack of water. The custom of splashing water rehydrates skin, makes it supple, gives a fresh lease of life and it is a loving reminder to all those hydrophobic people about the importance of bathing.
· Ayurveda recommends application of various herbal pastes in the months Spring. As already said, during winters dehydrated skin accumulates loads of toxins and dead skin tissues. It makes skin look dull and lifeless. In view of removing dead skin layer and restore optimum blood circulation to the skin it logically makes sense to apply herbal pastes and formulations. Traditionally, Ayurveda have been a part of Indian life style. In a playful act doing things have been a part of this amazing culture and one of the oldest civilizations. Interestingly playing Holi with different colours was a part of annual skin cleanse. Although, we have lost our way in lack of an appropriate understanding of the tradition. Ayurveda recommends herbal formulations and colours extracted from natural resources. One can prepare colours from Natural resources for their use and trust me it doesn’t take too many efforts. It is healthy for skin and devoid of the allergies and fear of adverse reactions later.
· Dried leaves of Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Bilwa (Aegle marmelos) renders green tinge colour and is healthy for skin. It is proven for its bactericidal and cooling properties.
· Dried wheat grass, leaves of Mehndi (Lawsonia inermis), and leaves of Gulmohar (Delonix regia) render light green colour. One should keep the quantity of Mehndi leaves lesser to avoid momentary staining of the skin (although it is not bad but you might have to go to office next day).
· Traditionally Tesu/ Palash (Butea monosperma) have been a great source of red colour. It also comes in Orange colour. A powder prepared with dried flowers of Tesu, red sandalwood, saffron gives a beautiful colour and also very healthy for the skin. It enhances complexion of the skin, removes patches and pigmentation. One can also use Kabila fruits (Mallotus philippenesis) with dried flowers of Hibiscus and dried pomegranate seeds. It gives beautiful light brick red colour and enhances beauty mixed with fun while playing along.
· Dried red rose petals, fragrant red sandalwood and dried hibiscus petals are just a healthy retreat in the month of spring; show your colours in style.
· If you add lemon drops in the Turmeric, it gives an orange shade. I don’t need to explain the medicinal properties. Add fine powder of fuller’s earth and white sandalwood powder to the mix to get the right proportion of the colour. Trust, your skin would shine in the entire extravaganza around.
· Beet root juice and pulp of black grapes added with water is a perfect solution for that magenta splash on each other. You shouldn’t be worried if the splash goes in your mouth. I am sure no one would resist being soaked into this kind of Holi.
· For yellow fuller’s earth, dried yellow Marigold petals and hint of turmeric powder would not only enhance joy of the Holi but would dash up your skin too.
Ayurveda recommends that you should play Holi in its own style. It not only increases communal compassion but it is healthy too. After finding all those colours I don’t think that one should play Holi only for one day. In my opinion with these preparations you should play Holi all through the spring. In case you don’t find partner you can enjoy these colours on your own, soak yourself in the colour you want.

GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7595768255778640972.post-79258330156627999192014-03-15T12:58:00.001+05:302014-03-18T10:49:37.253+05:30Osteoarthritis – 5 Points Someone

Life is a journey through the time and in the end everyone becomes wiser and smarter. Difficult question is whether the journey is to getting older or just waiting the time to pass till one goes into heavenly abode. Interestingly Ayurveda call this body “Sharir- one that undergoes constant deterioration.” The human body is an amazing example of the masterwork. Flawless! It would be an appropriate word to explain the artwork of the divine. I come across many people who just hate their bodies and number out numerous flaws in the body in terms of diseases. But honestly if we do not know the art of maintaining the body, there is no point hating the art. Of course, the beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. Unless we understand the importance of health, we shall never understand the worth of living this humanly heaven. Unfortunately our approach is reactive, while it should have been proactive. We take actions when things mess up, and the moment we are out of the mess we forget the reasons of the previous mess, and stop working over the residual effects. I have been working over a patient suffering from arthritis and she ended up saying this life is hell. She kept complaining that she cannot work the way she used to. She was obese, in her mid-fifties, and looked anxious. She suffered osteoarthritis and was not able to perform her day to day routines as before.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disorder of the joints mostly attacking knee joints. The reason is simple, due to the nature of the joint to bear the weight. We should follow few simple steps in order to maintain the joint health.

1. Accept – accept the nature of the disease. Osteoarthritis cannot be treated completely. Once the degeneration has occurred, the pain is going to be its integral feature. Although, the speed of the degeneration can be slowed down and the age of the joint can be enhanced with Ayurvedic treatments. Acceptance simply helps to understand the limitations created by the disease. It is a body’s call to slow down in routine process. Any haste in terms of walking, climbing could be dangerous. Protect your knee as much possible from sudden injuries. Problem is that we want to perform our routine duties with the same vigour as we were doing 5 years back. Never forget, it is not only the numbers of your age changing, but there is a continuous change in body physiology as well. No, you are not the only one to have been cursed by the aging; the person writing on this wall is equally going to be a sufferer. It is wiser to accept the changes occurred due to aging and to adjust the boat as per the flow of the water. It is good to know the limitations and eat as per the size of your mouth instead of trying to be a superman- trust me they look good in fictions only.

2. Pain is an Index – make the pain of your knee joint as an Index. Use the intensity of pain to understand the intensity of the injury to the knee joint. Popping a pain killer makes you forget the pain but does not mean the injury is no more persisting. Under the cover of NSAID, we tend to follow the same routine which may increase the degeneration process. But, I do not intend to say that you should not exercise any more. You should see your physiotherapist with immediate effect and learn exercises required to strengthen up the knee. Topical herbal oils with pain relieving properties could be of more help, as they work on the site of injury directly. By virtue of the properties of herbs, topical Ayurvedic herbal oil preparation enhances the micro circulation around the site of injury and increases blood circulation to that area resulting in enhanced oxygenation that helps to repair the damage and control it further.

3. Learn to say NO – if you are suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee, you should gradually learn to say NO to your certain existing habits. Every single effort that you put in towards your knee health goes a long way to avoid further damage to your joint. Avoid squatting, sitting cross legs, climbing stairs in usual rush, running, wearing high heels, sudden jerk to knee joint, lifting heavy weight. From Ayurvedic perspective certain foods should be avoided in order to reduce the pain like black lentils, egg plant, chick peas, rice, and food which are drier in nature and increases vata. Learn to say NO to the anxiety, and calm down by using the power of deep breathing.

4. Reduce weight – weight is one of the causative factors behind osteoarthritis, not only though. If you are overweight, you should understand that your own weight is exerting extra pressure on the joint and every time you walk with that weight, your knee joint is crushed under it. While reducing weight you should be gradual and do it by managing nutritious healthy diet and avoid crash diet plan. Reducing weight by means of crash diet may have an impact on bone health as essential minerals are also lost in the process. Supplement your diet with calcium rich food, and if needed have oral supplementation of the calcium. Seek the help of your physician for this purpose. Exercise, but do not overdo it. I generally suggest approximately 3 kilos a month target weight loss and maintain the goal till the time you achieve your target weight.

5. Ayurveda help – it is not for the sake of marketing Ayurveda but the treatments actually help in reducing the symptoms without the use of any internal medication. Treatments are simple and need periodical follow up as I mentioned before that it cannot be treated completely but could be managed and age of the knee joint could be enhanced till total knee replacement remains the only option. Deep tissue fomentation with oil, and local applications mentioned in traditional science of healing help improving knee health. Appropriate diet also helps in maintaining knee health. Broccoli, cabbage, white sesame, garlic, figs, soaked nuts etc. are few foods which are scientifically approved to enhance the knee health. As per a recent study broccoli and cabbage contain sulforaphane which helps in reducing cartilage damage secondary to OA. Performing saline water fomentation to your knee, ‘preferably soaking’ also helps in reducing pain and swelling. Traditionally, Epsom salt fomentation practically works well. Wearing knee cap or support depending upon the severity reduces excess pressure on knee joint and helps in reducing risk of potential injury to knee or surrounding cartilages.

Ayurveda could be an answer to your health problems, but only if you are ready to follow this life style. It requires sincere efforts, periodical follow ups, faith and perseverance to get the results.

Losing weight is a brain task than a physical engagement. The market is flooded with numerous products and guaranteed programs to lose weight, but nothing seems to be working for long. The problem - everyone is not the same. And the solutions that we bring out are the same for everyone. More than a doctor’s mind, it requires more understanding from the one who needs to lose weight. Problem persists at a point where patient thinks that it is the doctor’s work to find a solution for their problem. Working through the pro health programs for many years I ended up working more on obesity and found out that sometimes it is too difficult to work upon weight loss regime because it is like walking upon a thin line and chances of losing focus are always high despite having great beginners luck. However, I have got tremendous results in cases where client and doctor adopted a very simple approach. In such cases we did not even require any diet plans or treatments at all. Although there is no single full proof methodology for losing weight, but there could be certain general parameters which could be adopted by every person who wants to lose those extra pounds and trim down their flab into fab.

1. Meditate – although it may sound superfluous but it is true that meditation helps in losing weight to a great extent. It helps in synchronising brain with body physiology. Meditation is not only about spirituality or a tool to attain higher conscious. It also helps to unleash the powers of the body of self-healing. A simple visualisation of the self would be sufficient enough to get the desired results. Imagining self in particular dress or shape goes a long way in self-motivation. It is like working with the power of mind. Mind is strangely a strong entity, and people who realised the power of mind invented entirely a new philosophy of life – yoga. So, never underestimate the potentials hidden in the meditation and simply learn to use it.

2. Cut the crap – too much information on the net about weight loss is crap. And trying to learn from different resources about one topic could be dangerous affair if you do not belong to the same field, because interpretation of the resource would depend upon the clarity of the basic principles. No matter what diet is recommended from whom, the fact about weight loss is simple- consume lesser calories and spend more in a day. No matter what you eat, if you can put that food out of the system through work out it would balance the weight management. So, approach should be simple that if eatable is having more calories than you can put out, don’t grab it.

3. Exercise your brain – I had read about a treatment of obesity in Ayurveda- stress reduces weight. The statement kept me confused for a long time and I refrained advising this to my patients for a long time for my own inability to understand the fact. But I realise it today that it actually works. It is not the grammatical stress, but intellectual stress. Put food in your brain than putting food in your stomach and you will find that it actually works. Try to solve puzzles and fail holds the key. Solve it all over again. Question the present knowledge and reach out to the self for answers. Question everything, but don’t find answers in other’s books. Write your own rule for everything and pass your current knowledge through the yardstick of your own knowledge and intellect. The idea simply works on the grounds that if your brain is occupied with a question food could not be the answer for sure. If you couldn’t be thinner through this, you would surely be wiser. I haven’t found a single philosopher fat, my own knowledge about philosophers could be incomplete though- quest is on.

4. Time your meals – fixing up your meal timings works a long way in reducing and managing your weight. Breakfast at 8 AM, lunch at 1 PM, and dinner at 8 PM. And if you cannot manage these timings because of your work, then you are living a life of slave (it’s my opinion, could be wrong). After all I am working for my comfort and food. If my work is hindering my food timings and comfort I go back to point 3 above.

In addition to this point make another rule not to eat anything in between the meals. If hunger pangs trouble you satiate your desire with roasted pumpkin seeds, fruits, green salad, buttermilk, barley water, hot water, green tea (I mean only one thing to be grabbed and not all together).

5. Walk a while – it is essential to have a physical workout every day. For those who cannot follow a regular workout regimen they should start doing simple house hold things on their own or for that matter send your peon for a leave for some time. I generally prefer playing a game that involves physical activity. It helps to reduce stress, increases blood circulation, strengthens up the muscles, maintains cardiac health, induces sleep and enhances neuromuscular coordination.

6. Patience – finally the patience works for everything. You did not put on over a day; neither should you look out to lose over a day. It is utterly futile to go on crash diet plans; chances of recurrence and rebound weight gain are higher through this way. Additionally following a specific diet plan has a tendency to build up the residual stress which is unhealthy and increases food cravings. It is for a simple reason that running away from things does not mean that you have found a solution. I would prefer to eat what I want but just to satiate my tongue not my stomach.

Although it is not all that you need to do lose weight but for sure it is the first ladder to your goal. Set your targets right and have a long term plan for losing weight. Keep your eyes focused on what you want and you should get what you want.

It is intriguing to understand the rich traditional Indian knowledge in all walks of life. And it is more interesting to know the outreach of this widespread knowledge through the skillful documentation of the information since the time unknown. There were different methodologies for the nomenclature and common ways to identify the herbs were devised. Methodologies to name and identify the drugs were formed in such a way that medicinal properties should be known to even those who are unaware of the common herbs and their uses. Sometimes I wonder, is it really necessary to do a scientific research on all the documentation done in past? Isn’t it a futile effort to establish something which has already been established for ages? I really do not know when we will believe that Ayurvedic approach towards human health is the most scientific and holistic approach.

Tulsi or Holy basil is one of the most common herbs known to Indian house hold. It is grown uniformly in almost every house, not to mention the reason – religious. Most of us might not be aware that it is more due to scientific reason than religious alone which would be discussed later. Holy basil has following synonyms and each of it signifies properties of Tulsi.

तुलसी – तुलां सादृश्यं – which relates to balance or brings balance

सुरसा – possesses good taste

ग्राम्या – which grows in villages

सुलभा – available easily

बहुमञ्जरी – one with multiple flowering pods

अपेतराक्षसी – which removes evils

भूतघ्नी – which eradicates negativity

देवदुन्दुभिः - Dundhubi is a synonym for Lord Vishnu

It is incredible to find so much of information about a medicine hidden in its names.

Latin name - Ocimum sanctum Linn.

Family - Labiatae

Primarily, holy basil is pungent in taste and it has bitter secondary taste. It means technically its potency should be hot in action. Due to its hot potency, Ocimum sanctum (OS) increases Pitta (Fire) and results in burning sensation. Especially to those already suffering from gastritis, they should avoid excessive use of the herb except when needed. Due to its property of being hot it is a drug of choice in diseases of Kapha and Vata origin like common cold, cough with expectoration, asthma, colic pain and so on. As per the synonyms Apetrakshasi and Bhootaghni, it suggests the role of this herb on devils. It has to be understood in right context. In ancient times devils were described as disruptive elements that possessed extraordinary qualities to create trouble in bodily society. They had evolved to remain invisible and create turbulence around. This is why they required special human beings with an insight to distinguish them and kill the evil. In fact, in my opinion sages meant to explain bacteria and other microorganisms that were invisible to naked eyes (Bhoot means the one beyond the physical elements –microorganism may fall in the category). Modern scientific understanding of the herb establishes the fact.

As per the review article by S. K. Gupta et al – Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS, New Delhi, India (Indian Journal of experimental biology/ vol. 40/ July 2002/ pp. 765-773), the aqueous leaf extract showed insecticidal and antibacterial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. The ethanolic extract from Tulsi was demonstrated to be a better antiviral agent. Today, we have a devised radiotherapy against cancer, and in context to the ancient references it shall also be considered as Bhoota (invisible foreign invasion). Scientifically, we know today the Radioprotective, anticarcinogenic and antioxidant properties of Tulsi (P Uma Devi, Department of Radiobiology, KMC, Manipal; Indian Journal of experimental biology/ vol. 39/ March 2001). There is no doubt why altruistic sages named the herb Bhootaghni. Leaves of Tulsi can be used for local application on chronic infected wounds in paste form. It can be highly effective in those having diabetic foot. It is due to the fact that as per a recent study on mice, ethanolic OS leaf extract showed the efficacy in lowering the blood glucose levels substantially. In diabetic foot the dual efficacy of the single herb could be utilized to its maximum. For its optimum results, dry powder of Tulsi leaves can be taken empty stomach in the dosage of 3 – 4 gms with warm water.

As per Bhav Prakash, Tulsi promotes digestion. It especially works on Dhatuagni (Metabolic digestion and absorption mechanism). No wonder why it makes pancreas to work and helps in reducing blood sugar. As per traditional knowledge of healing, Tulsi is a very good remedy for Kushtha (leprosy). It is again to understand that as per Ayurveda any chronic skin infection with non-healing nature which results in damage of tissues is called as Kushtha (कुष्णाति वपुः). It is also very effective in chronic urinary tract infections. In cases of painful and burning micturition cold infusion prepared with Tulsi leaves could be very effective. It is a good blood purifier and an excellent remedy in circulatory disorders. As per the research paper above, Tulsi leaf powder in 1% of dosage to mice showed significant hypolipidaemic effect. It is no doubt that Tulsi remains a wonderful drug and probably that is why it has been regarded so much in ancient texts. Due to its multiple benefits and the ease of availability it became an Indian tradition to grow the herb in household.

OS leaves contain 0.7% volatile oil. This oil contains multiple chemical structures in it. This makes Tulsi to be very effective herb against worms, parasites, mosquitos and other microorganisms. In India it has been a tradition to grow this herb in front of the house and to light an earthen lamp with a cotton wick soaked in oil. It would be interesting to see the reaction. This light must be helping green leaves of Tulsi to emit some component of instable oil into the air thus removing mosquitos and moths from surrounding area although it needs to be validated and experimented. But, as far as my knowledge goes I haven’t seen mosquitos feeding around Tulsi. Indian tradition always had logic behind every action; unfortunately we do not have time to understand the wisdom but to follow rituals blind folded.

Further adding on to the properties of this amazing herb, Bhav Prakash explains its role on abdominal colic. Due to its hot potency and volatile oils in it, Tulsi becomes and obvious choice in spasmodic pains of abdomen. A hot infusion is prescribed in such cases. During the menstruation some of the females go through an excruciating pain in abdomen. It is due to aggravated Vata. Hot infusion made up of Tulsi leaves along with bishop seed relieves the pain by regulating Vata channels. Ayurveda recommends Tulsi in aggravated Kapha disorders like allergic cough, asthma, COPD, bronchitis. Volatile oil present in Tulsi removes congestion from the channels, helps in broncho dilatation and increases oxygenation. It is found to be very effective in allergic cold and viral fever conditions.

To enlist properties and uses of Tulsi is an exhaustive task. It is antibacterial, anti-allergic, antipyretic, analgesic, it reduces cholesterol levels, brings down increased blood sugar levels, strong antioxidant, adaptogenic, contains antiviral properties, radioprotective, possesses anticarcinogenic properties, aphrodisiac and don’t know what else. And if nothing at all, growing Tulsi in your garden does not harm at all; at least it could protect your house from deadly mosquitos. Ayurvedic wisdom says,

It has two major components: 1) blood plasma which is watery liquid that contains water, protein and other solutes like electrolytes, gases etc. and 2) formed elements – Platelets, WBCs, and RBCs.
Platelets occupy less than 1% of the formed elements. Platelets break off from the megakaryocytes in red bone marrow and then enter the blood circulation. In between 150,000 to 400,000 platelets are present in each µL of blood (Tortora). Platelets help to stop blood loss by forming platelet plug and have a short life span, between 5 to 9 days, while dead platelets are removed by spleen and liver.
Platelets essentially contribute towards the immunity of the body by periodical repair of the blood vessels and saving blood loss. Number of platelets becomes essential marker in cases of sever immune attack by extrinsic or intrinsic factors. In cases of Dengue, which is caused by Aedes aegypti there is a constant lapse in number of platelets which may result in internal hemorrhage resulting in potential life risk. Restoration of platelets can be achieved by incorporating dietary changes alone and Ayurveda can contribute essentially in saving lives. Routine consumables can be used judiciously in order to achieve medicinal effect and Ayurvedic life style is all about using food as a medicine.
Food, which help in nourishing our blood is described below with references of its properties and uses mentioned in traditional system of healing – Ayurveda.
द्राक्षा (Grapes)

Latin name – Vitis vinifera Linn.
Family – Vitaceae
Bhav Prakash says ripened grapes are naturally laxatives and cold in potency. Ayurveda suggests in order pacifying a specific dosha and its qualities, properties which are opposite to the nature of the vitiated dosha should be incorporated. Pitta shares a symbiotic relationship with metabolic factor blood, thus results in multiple disorders related to circulatory system. It is important to find out a drug which should have laxative effect (as it is a default treatment for Pitta) and also possesses cooling effect. Interestingly, Grape contains both the qualities and becomes an obvious choice of medicine where in blood is vitiated due to increase of Pitta.
Grapes, when completely formed are sweet in taste and clears voice. It can be effectively given to those suffering from hoarse voice. It also contains slight astringent taste and increases out flow of urine and stool. It creates bloating of abdomen. Grapes increase male sexual strength but may increase kapha. It induces strength in the body and enhances taste.
It removes excessive thirst. It is highly recommended to those who constantly complain of dry mouth. In such cases dry grapes (raisins) soaked overnight seems to be more appropriate. Ripened grapes which are sweet in taste should be given in fever as it reduces Vidaha which is integral symptom in Fever. Grapes especially are very effective in Asthma. As per Ayurveda, asthma can lead to degeneration of metabolic factors (Dhatu) and deterioration of metabolic factors can lead to various disorders related to malnutrition. In asthma, people generally suffer from anemia especially iron deficient. This is due to poor digestive capacity that metabolic factors cannot absorb heavy minerals from the food. It reduces the oxygen binding and further results in breathlessness on exertion and other symptoms. In such cases iron loading cannot be very good decision due to poor digestive state and in many cases it has been resulted in diarrhea. Grapes become a drug of choice in this case and Ayurveda specially recommend. It removes excess loading of pitta from the circulation being naturally purgative. It also nourishes Rakta Dhatu (Blood), induces strength and increases oxygen binding capacity of the blood cells thus helps in Asthma.
As per Bhav Prakash, seasoned grapes help to treat Arthritis. It is due to the chemical composition of the grapes. It is a rich source of all essential minerals and vitamins which are helpful in bone regeneration. It is a natural source of potassium (185 mg), calcium (11 mg), zinc (0.05 mg), phosphorus (13 mg), vitamin C (10.8 mg), B1 (0.092 mg), B2 (0.057 mg), B6 (0.110 mg), and E (0.700mg) per 100 grams(http://www.botanical-online.com/uvasangles.htm). These all are essential components of healthy bones and tissues. In early changes of osteoarthritis grapes could be used as a natural remedy (diabetic people should use soaked raisins). It is also recommended to those suffering from Gouty Arthritis and Jaundice. It is due to the principle of Pitta detoxification as per Ayurveda. Grapes are naturally diuretic (promotes urination), thus they are helpful in dysuria (painful and burning urination).
In Ayurveda, grapes are essentially recommended in Raktapitta which is generally compared to epistaxis (nasal bleed). It is important to understand that when Ayurveda discusses Raktapitta, it is not about one single disease but a syndrome with various representations which is essentially caused by vitiated Pitta (Fire) and Rakta (Blood). As mentioned before about symbiosis of Pitta and Rakta, whenever pitta gets vitiated especially due to the increase of its hot and liquid properties it results in increase of the blood volume. This increased heat has its own effect on the physiology of rakta (blood) and may result in destruction of essential components of the blood, especially those which help in continuous arterial repair – platelets. This is how raktapitta manifests as per Ayurveda. Due to the increased blood volume and thinning of the arterial walls because of vitiated Pitta especially in the areas where arteries/ capillaries are naturally weak sudden bleeding occurs due to any external/ internal factors like stress, strenuous exercise etc. When it bleeds per nasal it is called Urdhvag Raktapitta (epistaxis), while it per anal bleeding is called as Adhog Raktapitta. When it starts to bleed per cutaneous (through skin) it is named as Tiryak Raktapitta. Per cutaneous bleeds are seen in multiple conditions and generally arise from drastic loss of blood platelets. In dengue also when platelets see a sharp decline red blue rashes are seen on the skin. Grapes, not only removes excess pitta from the blood but also help in bone marrow rejuvenation due to its natural properties and increases platelet count when used as a medicine. It is a useful herbal medicine in all types of Raktapitta. It could be recommended in early stages of Dengue/ Yellow fever to avoid further complications of the deadly viral fever. It is advisable to have 10 – 15 number of fresh ripened grapes especially black grapes three times a day to have medicinal effect of the same. It may generate lose stools which is normal and part of the treatment only. Grapes are also recommended to those suffering from Delirium, burning sensations and mal nutrition. Ayurveda says that soaked raisin is a very effective remedy for post alcohol toxicity and chronic alcoholism.
This article intends to spread awareness about medicinal use of indigenous herbs and common foods available around us. Ayurveda, an opulent traditional culture through the time immortal evaluates everything through the scientific eye and establishes the principles of healthy living for generations to come. Indigenous pharmacopeia is very rich and references are found in form of Nighantu (Indian Materia Medica). Bhav Prakash Nighantu explains properties of the curd in detail and also throws light upon medicinal value of it. It is essential to understand that food remains an essential therapy in traditional medicine of India. Achrya Charak says, all the diseases are an outcome of poor absorption capacity of the system. Bringing out the properties of curd and its uses from the traditional books in view of facts and to remove the myths related to the consumption of the curd.

Properties of curd

It is hot in potency. Curd, due to fermentation process possesses hot potency. It is by virtue of change in chemical structure of the milk due to bacterial action. As it is evident that no chemical reaction can occur without the presence of heat, milk which is potentially cold by nature attains pitta property by virtue of the transformation of the chemical structure. Achrya Bhav Prakash says, curd helps in stimulating digestive fire. As per the basic principle of Ayurveda, sour taste is composed of fire and earth. The presence of fire in sour taste stimulates digestive fire, thus curd.

Curd is unctuous in nature and contains astringent sub taste. It is heavy to digest; having said that means that it should be consumed in small quantities in order to maintain a healthy digestive fire.

The final metabolic taste of the curd is sour (amla) as per Bhav Prakash which means it should have a tendency to increase Pitta due to high fire quotient. It has a tendency to create congestion and also binding in nature, this particular effect of the curd is seen in cases of diarrhea where in it helps to bind the stool. Due to its properties of being heavy and unctuous, curd tends to increase fat and may also result in water retention. This is why it is avoided in cases of diseases of kapha origin, specially obesity, cellulite and rheumatoid arthritis. Due to its hot potency and sour metabolic taste, curd tends to vitiate pitta and creates imbalance in blood metabolism resulting in certain skin diseases. Probably, that is the reason why Ayurvedic texts suggest avoiding curds in leukoderma and psoriasis kind of disorders of the skin.

It is specially recommended in Dysuria – a condition with painful micturition. One needs to understand that it specially refers to the condition associated with urinary tract infections or similar to that. In these conditions, ayurveda recommends a specific type of curd which is not fully formed and tasteless; it is called as Mandak (मन्दं दुग्धवत् अव्यक्त रसं). It is diuretic in nature and helps in cleansing of the bladder and urethra. It may result in epigastric burning if consumed in excess.

Curd is also recommended in common cold condition. In common cold after 3 days or so only curd should be advised. Due to its properties of increasing kapha, curd increases per nasal discharge, so once the cold is chronic and nasal discharge is scanty and creating congestion in the nostrils, curd consumption increases the discharge and works as a mucolytic agent. In these conditions completely formed curd having sweet taste should be prescribed.

As per Bhav Prakash, use of curd is beneficial in Visham Jwara (Pyrexia of unknown origin). It is equally beneficial in cases of aversion to food and indigestion. It works well in cases of altered bowel habits and also helps to maintain normal colonic flora being rich in probiotic bacteria. Ayurveda recommends it to those suffering from loss of weight and malnutrition. It induces strength and helps in spermatogenesis (production of sperms).

Rules of consumption

Ayurveda recommends that one should adhere to the rules of food consumption. It is essential to understand that due to complex chemical structures of certain consumables body requires optimum assimilation capacity.

न नक्तं दधि भुञ्जीत...

च. सू. ७/६१

As per Agnivesha in Charak Samhita one should never consume curd at night. Due to fermentation process curd by nature becomes very heavy to digest. It requires a good amount of metabolic activity in order to be digested thoroughly. Also, at the end of digestion curd increases Kapha and creates congestion in the channels which leads to poor lymphatic drainage. During the day when body is physically active it is easier to manage such congestion but at night when metabolic activity naturally slows down it may result in morning stiffness and water retention, thus leading to poor metabolic absorption (indigestion at cellular level). This is one another reason why curd has been contraindicated for people suffering with Rheumatoid arthritis or chronic indigestion. In order to maintain an optimum health one should never consume curd at night. Although, few other classical author believe that one can consume curd at night mixing it with other foods, but a critical analysis of the previous statement seems more appropriate and one should avoid consuming curd at night in all circumstances. It may generate generalized stiffness, weight gain, edema, puffiness of eyes, heaviness of the head etc.

Furthermore, permutations along with mode of consumption of curd with other foods have been mentioned by Ayurvedic texts as following.

When curd is consumed with ghee, it increases Kapha and pacifies Vata. It could be advised in cases where patient is having chronic cough with scanty mucous which is creating congestion. In such cases curd mixed with ghee would work as a mucolytic agent by virtue of increasing the quantity of Kapha helping in clearing the channels. But this combination may result in indigestion, so it should not be practiced continuously and used for curative values only.

Curd mixed with sugar is very effective in cases of gastritis. In people suffering with burning sensation of the stomach, sugar works as a catalyst to curd and generates cooling effect in curd thus relieving gastric burning. It is recommended to those suffering peptic ulcers and also effective in ulcerative colitis. Diabetic people should be careful using sugar and consume it with mint leaves (Pudina) instead, if required. Curd with sugar is also recommended to those suffering excessive thirst.

Curd, when it is consumed with green lentil clear soup (Mudga Yusha), pacifies vata and maintains pitta equilibrium. It can be used in Pain Abdomen associated with gaseous distention or bloating.

It becomes tastier to eat and produces minimum undue effects when consumed with Honey. And, when consumed with Indian Goose Berry (Amla), curd pacifies Pitta and relieves various skin problems generated by vitiated blood. It is a very good combination in those suffering skin sensitivities due to sun exposure like sun burn, rashes, boils and so on. Curd can also be consumed adding salt into it.

Winter (Hemant), Late winter (Shishir), and Monsoon/ Rainy (Varsha) are the best seasons to consume curd, while in Autumn (Sharad), Summer (Greeshma), and Spring (Vasant) either it should be consumed in moderation or completely avoided in order to maintain an optimum digestive fire.

Ayurvedic wisdom says,

अहाराचार चेष्टासु सुखार्थी प्रेत्य चेह च I परम् प्रयत्नमातिष्ठेद बुद्धिमान् हितसेवने I

च. सू. ७/ ६०

The one, who seeks best in this life and salvation later, should constantly and continuously engage him/ herself in healthier practices of food and social conduct.

GA4P4ABVWZ4B

GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7595768255778640972.post-77778125069224374622012-08-10T22:34:00.001+05:302012-08-10T22:41:21.103+05:30Ayurveda Herbs - Cumin
Cumin

Cumin is one of the most common and known spice. It has a special effect on brain and strengthens the memory. In my opinion it could be an effective herb in cases of Irritable Bowel Syndrome where in patient passes frequent lose motions along with stress. Cumin seeds are known for its properties of uterine cleansing. It is an effective herb in cases of dysmenorrhoea. Ladies suffering with painful menstruations can take a hot infusion during their menstruation. It helps in alleviating Vata, regulates menstruation, and cleanses uterus as well. Pregnant women should avoid taking cumin in large quantities due to its vasodilatation effect and heating property. It also helps in reducing fever by generating sweat.
As per ancient wisdom of life, cumin seeds promote digestion and also enhance sexual vigour. It is a stimulant, thus works on erectile dysfunctions. Cumin also increases strength. Cumin helps in lacto genesis so it could be given in small quantity to lactating mothers.
Bhav Prakash says, cumin helps in promoting eye sight, and removes gaseous bloating of abdomen, vomiting, and diarrhoea. And famously used for hookworm treatments. Thymol is also known to have certain antimicrobial properties. Probably that is the reason why Ajwain is so potent in cases of gaseous bloating of abdomen and dysentery. It could be used in amoebic dysentries. As per Ayurveda, Ajwain also helps in splenic disorders. It is also believed that thymol is effective in removing certain fungal infections of finger nails and toe nails. It would be advisable for people suffering with fungal infections of nails to wash the nails with decoction prepared with Ajwain seeds for two to three times a day.
Due to its strong odor it is used in removing foul smell from many pungent oils especially of castor oil. In chronic dry cough it can be used effectively to remove Kapha. In cases of asthma (shwas) Ajwain powder in prescribed dose is given with hot water. Powder of Ajwain mixed with Epsom salt is known to cure chronic indigestion in folklore practices, and factually it is effective. Although people suffering with hypertension should be careful about the dose as it contains salt.
In pain abdomen, rheumatic pains and joint pains poultice is prepared and used for fomentation of local area to eradicate pain. It is widely used to enhance the taste and also to provide a flavor to the food. Ancient wisdom of Ayurveda says, it is pungent in taste, sharp in action and stimulates digestive fire. It is known for its potential action over Kapha and Vata. Black pepper, due to its property of being hot, helps in liquefying the Kapha. Due to this property it becomes a drug of choice in cases of chronic cough wherein sputum is very sticky and creates congestion in respiratory system. That is the reason why in cases of Bronchial Asthma fine black pepper powder is advised for internal use. It immediately helps in broncho dilation due to stimulation effect and mobilizes the phlegm from bronchioles. It contains an alkaloid called piperin which makes this herb an excellent catalyst.
Black pepper increases digestive juices and stimulates digestive fire. Ginger is one of the most common spice used in Indian kitchen and also world over. It breaks down stools due to its property of sharpness. The herb is predominant of fire quotient thus helps in promoting digestive fire. Due to its hot potency it also ignites digestive fire and becomes a very good medicine in cases of indigestion. In chronic cases of indigestion, it is advisable to have a small piece of ginger along with hot water. It is given for internal use in form of hot infusion in cases of rheumatoid arthritis. It is pungent in taste and mitigates Vata due to hot property while it helps in liquefaction of mucous (Kapha) and drains out the lymph. In cases of pain and congestion of throat, one can use hot infusion of Ginger for gargles. It reduces pain and removes Kapha.

In cases of common cold and cough where in mucous is not thoroughly drained, Ginger along with honey is given to produce mucolytic effect. Ginger contains zingirol and 1- 3 % of volatile oils. Dry form of ginger is an effective herb for abdominal colic. Essentially it is given in form of hot infusion. Dry ginger powder is considered very effective in Hypovolemic shock to restore peripheral blood circulation. It is rubbed constantly on hands and feet to restore thermodynamics.

Ginger is hot in potency, so it should be cautiously used in Pitta personality types and also Pitta disorders. It aggravates Pitta, so it should be avoided in cases of Gastritis as it may result in gastric irritation and symptom like epigastric burning may increase. Hypertensive patients should use ginger in moderate quantity only.

The one who understands Pratishthaa (reputation) becomes Pratishtha
(reputed) in its race and also in this world. Upanishad says, “Chakshu
(eyes) are the reputation.”

To understand it comprehensively, the meaning of the Chakshu needs
to be understood. The sense of vision is responsible for seeing things clearly
and understands the material in all the dimensions. Vision helps us to weigh
the possibilities and also help in judging potential threats. It helps us to
place ourselves in a secure and stable position.

Your vision is the repute of your organization

The vision is an ultimate destiny of an organization. It could be divided
in two parts for an easy understanding,

Organizational goal

Without a
goal, any organization would behave like a small boat lost in the pacific. It works
like a guiding star, and also a gauge. It is essential that the vision should
not be a mere tool of self amusement. Vision of your organization should be
multidimensional. It should revolve around the sense of uplifting one and all. The
vision of your organization should not be motivated out of greed, but it should
be an effort to motivate the mass for a revolution. And the organizational goal
should be complemented by achieving short term targets. And one should make
sure to share the organizational vision with each and every part of it, living,
or non living. It generates the required passion and also works as a yardstick
whenever you lose focus.

Analytical Abilities

Vision also includes the analytical abilities of your organization. One should
always concentrate over the potential threats, own possessions, lacking skills,
and futuristic possibilities. The one who possesses the calculative decision
making power never lose the battle of fierce competition.

Veda says, “The one who
possesses the clear vision, establishes itself amongst the most reputed
company.”

Rule 4

यो ह वै संपद वेद संहास्मै कामाः पद्यन्ते

The one who acknowledges the Sampad (prosperity)
persuades Sampad (opulence) not only in his race but the
world over. Upanishad says, “Shrotra (sense of hearing) is
Sampad (prosperity).

Our sense of hearing enables us to perceive the science
and also help us to understand it in its specialized form. When we undertake
any action after the complete perception of the matter, it always reaps a sweet
fruit.

Comprehensive feedback is the Prosperity of your
Organization

When we are working at a level where we do not seek anything
lesser than perfection, there always remain a room for shortcomings. This is
something that we tend to ignore considering it a small thing or could be fixed
later attitude. ‘Feedback’ is like a resonance. The kind of a sound we make
comes back to us. It helps us to understand the kind of vibes our organization
is generating. Wise people say, “Silence is Gold.” By realizing your dream, you
have already made an impact or sent percussion around, feedback is to keep
silence and listen to your own conscience.

Feedback is the key. It is like a meditation. One should
remain all ears to the finer details. Be it the customer, your first line managers,
or your security guard. A good advice can flow from any corner. It always would
help you to be active than being reactive. Not that every advice would be as
important, but the reaction would reach you only if you lend your ears. Feedback
should never be taken as a criticism, but it should always be used as a door
for the improvement. An organization should inculcate the habit of procuring
feedback at every level. Following are few examples

Service feedback

Managerial feedback

Communicative feedback

Personal feedback

After getting the appropriate advices let your conscience
decide the room for the improvement.

Veda says, “In
the deepest of your silence, you hear the speech of your mind.”

Rule
5

यो ह वा आयतनम वेद आयतनम ह स्वानाम भवति

The one who knows the Ayatana (the shelter/source) becomes
the Ayatana (the source) for its own race. Upanishad says,
“Definitely the Mana (Mind) is the Ayatana(The source/
Shelter).”

The mind is the source of all the actions. And our senses are like
servant to our mind. Whatever subject is perceived by our senses is brought to
the amusement of the mind. The mind controls our deeds. The mind is such a
strong force in our body that we keep on dancing on its tunes. It never allows
us to focus. The one, who knows the potential of the mind, becomes the source
of joy, happiness, and fulfillment.

Your determination is the Source of your Fulfillment

If you want to live a fulfilled life, it is essential to focus on
your mind. The mind is the source of your courage. Mind is the ultimate creator
and destroyer too. Once the mind is in absolute form of stability, it can reap
anything you want. It is the most difficult entity to handle in this world.
Mind is such a minute entity that it can make you travel even to the unknown
worlds. It takes you to the places where you never have been to. But one has to
ensure, where you want to be? If you will not decide, then mind would do it for
you. And mind has a fascination towards the subjects that are not meant for
you. It keeps you confused. It is an obvious block created by that supreme
force. Had this block not been there, everybody would become successful. But,
there are only few, who knew their mind and rode over the ladder of eternal
success.

Keep your mind in your control. Let your conscious- the soul be
the guide to your mind. Never allow it to go to the ‘RIGHT’ or to the ‘LEFT’,
but stay focused. Arjuna could hit the bird’s eye, “because he saw only the
eye.”

Vedic wisdom is so profound that
every single piece of information could be interpreted in any context. Upanishads
are the easier forms of the traditional Vedic wisdom. They are an excellent
piece of Vedic style of management theories. All you need to do is to interpret
the information in the most relevant context and practice it in accordance with
modern implications.

This article tries to produce an
insight in the Vedic understanding of Human body in reference to the Modern principles
of Organizational Management. Chandagyo Upanishad considers five
essential elements that are needed for spiritual upliftment of the mankind. This
reference of understanding humanity, when replaced with an Organizational
structure, becomes an essential tool to construct a successful, holistically progressive,
and meaningful corporate company.

While explaining spiritual
upliftment of the mankind, Chandagyo Upanishad quotes the references given
below. We are trying to replace ‘the humanity’ with ‘an organizational
structure’ considering that every organization has a meaningful purpose.
Sometimes, in the competitive environment the organizations fail to remember their
roots. Idea of holistic development may seem to be new, but, none the less it
is quite relevant. We need to construct sustainable ventures because an
organization is not meant only for the prosperity of the owner/top management.

There are many other vital
factors associated in a company which makes an organization in totality.
Herewith, follows the fivefold methodology of holistically sustainable Vedic
Management.

Rule 1

यो ह वै ज्येष्ठम च श्रेष्ठम च वेद ज्येष्ठश्च ह वै
श्रेष्ठश्च भवति

The one
who can categorize the true elder and the superlative becomes the elder and the
superior amongst the race. Upanishad says, “The Prana (force of
the life) is the best and the leader.”

Resources
are the Prana of your organization

For
any organization, from establishment to the successful running most essential
requirement is its resources. At the time of conceptualizing any project, the
vital link is resources. And it becomes again relevant when the operations take
off. Resources could be divided in two categories:

Financial resources

Human resources

Vedic
understanding says that any organization should pay the utmost regards to these
two vital links. The one who can figure out the eldest and the best becomes the
leader and superlative in its race.

Your
investor is the elder

For a successful company, it is essential to
remember its investors at every stage. Without a strong back hold, no matter
how large any company becomes, it couldn’t have survived a single breath. Lions always
make sure to observe the distance they had traveled.

Your
human resource is the best

According
to an old saying, “The weapon is not important, the man behind the weapon is
the one who matters.” For the successful running of a company, human resource
is indispensable. Every single worker of the organization is unique and equally
important. Company should enhance the feeling of ownership and make its
employees a part of its success.

Veda
says, “The one who concentrates on its Prana, fulfills his all desires.”

Rule 2

यो ह वै वसिष्ठम वेद वसिष्ठो ह स्वानाम भवति

The
one who can make out Vasishtha (the survivor/the wealthier/the propagator)
becomes Vasishtha (the survivor/richest/acknowledged) in its race. Upanishad
says, “The Vaka (speech) is survivor/richest/acknowledged.”

Communication
is Vasishtha of your organization

Communication
plays an integral part in the success of an individual or an organization. As per
the Vedic understanding, one should pay utmost attention to communication. The one
who seeks victory should worship his speech. From an organizational point of
view, communication could be further divided in following types,

Oral communication

Written communication

Broadcasting & blogging

Internal communication

Any other way that establishes connection
between the customer and service provider

Communication
should be fundamentally correct, prompt, thoughtful, and wise. Meaning of worshiping speech is, “One should communicate humbly.” Sometimes a humble ‘NO’
works well instead of a forced ‘YES’. And it is absolutely OK to delay the
answer if you are not very sure of the action or requirement. We have seen many
organizations in a dilemma due to undue haste in making statements and later
repent.

Any
word that you utter is heard, consciously or unconsciously. And a good oration/drafting/expression
establishes an individual comprehensively in the society. So it does to an
organization as well.

Veda
says, “The one who masters the speech becomes the
acknowledged, famous, and richest.”

Ayurveda,
an ancient science of life, resorts to the overall development of the mankind.
It does not limit itself in physical boundaries, but expands the wisdom of its
experiences to guide the life to the ultimate realm, the salvation. Every
breath in this physical world is a journey towards the fundamental reality of
life – the death. Factually the death should not be an ending, but a beginning of
the unknown world. Since the time of evolution, human race conquered many mile
stones. The science of medicines made amazing discoveries in the field of life,
but unfortunately, no one could define how the journey ends? Why the heart
stops beating even though the muscles of it are not prone to the fatigue? But
the answer is illusive. When the logic cannot define something, one needs to
turn towards philosophy. Ayurveda explains, “An ultimate purpose of human life
is to get Moksha (salvation).” To get rid of the vicious cycle of
rebirth is called as Moksha. To explain the salvation, different
methodologies have been taught. Ayurveda says, “Physical body manifests itself
due to Moha (attachment), Icha (desires), and Dwesha (revenge).”
In a simpler format it could be assigned that Moksha (Salvation) is
the complete detachment from these
mental blocks. It is the union of oneself with the cosmic conscious. Though, it
remains an uphill task to find the cosmic awareness, however many methodologies
have been formulated in different philosophies.

Ayurveda
classifies Atma (The soul) in two categories; Paramatma (The
universal conscious), and Jeevatma (The conscious). Difference
between the conscious and cosmic awareness could be identified in following
verse,

निर्विकार परस्त्वात्मा सत्व भूत गुण एन्द्रीयहि !

चैतनयो कारणं
नित्यो द्रष्टा पश्यती हि सर्वा क्रिया !!

चरक संहिता/ सूत्र स्थान

Paramatma
(the pure conscious) is Nirvikar
(absolutely perfect). When the universal conscious combines with Satva
(mind), Bhoota (five elements), Guna (qualities), and
Indriya (senses), it manifests itself into the physical body. It is
immortal, spectator, and witnesses all the actions.

Above
definition of Paramatma is an absolute eye opener. It does not only
describe the existence of the Almighty, but also makes us realize that every
individual is the manifestation of the universal conscious. As per the
description, universal awareness multiplies itself into various forms of life
and each of the living entity is mere replication of that perfect self. It raises
a question. If we are all the part of that Paramatma, we should be
equally aware. Acharya Charaka says, “When the conscious unites the Bhoota,
it is predominated by Rajas (selfish mobility), and Tamas (blissful
ignorance) which results in subconscious suppression of the ultimate
wisdom.” It makes us to forget our origin and enables us to become mechanical
entities.

The ultimate
purpose of human life is to realize that particle of the supreme conscious within
oneself and all. Because our analytical ability is an advantage above the other
races of life. Probably this is the reason why we are repetitively told that
human life is precious. The time we separate ourselves from the mental and physical
limitations, it lifts our conscious to another level of awareness. One should
practice conscious detachment from the materialism. Having said that, it does
not mean that one should not love what he does, but one should not cultivate
the nature of possession. One should constantly practice to overcome the
desires because desires result in greed which further ends up in attachment to
the Karma (resulting action). And any residual desire
forces the conscious to reincarnate itself to materialize the completion in
next life. Having said that it does not mean not to have any desires, but one
should try to fulfill the desire that had manifested within the subconscious
and at the same time one should constantly practice to limit the desires which
are manifested out of the greed quotient. The sense of revenge is another
factor responsible as a blocking stone on the road of higher conscious.
Ayurveda call it as Dwesha. One should cultivate the habit of loving thy
world as a replica of itself. Not to have the sense of jealousy and also not to
have a feeling of competition. Completion makes us the part of the rat race. It
also develops the inferiority complex that end up in various forms of mental
sickness. This again holds us back to be spiritually free and lands us into the
cycle of rebirth. Ayurveda says, “when mind overcomes Rajas (selfish
mobility), and Tamas (blissful ignorance), it destroys even the strongest
of your Karma (unaware actions) resulting in spiritual freedom,
which is nothing but Moksha (The Salvation)."

In the
modern day world, we don’t have time for anything that can slow our race to
achieve our set goals. A widespread ailment that affects us all, adult and
child, is common cold. Generally, it happens to each individual, depending on
their level of immunity, at least once or twice a year.Basically,
common cold is a viral infection that attacks the respiratory system of an
individual. These viruses can be contagious and can come from any form of
pollutants that our prevalent in our modern world. Depending on which part of
the respiratory system the virus attacks, cold can be divided into three
different categories:

All of
the above mentioned forms have some common symptoms which are a response of the
individual’s immune system to the infection. These symptoms include cough, sore
throat, runny nose or congestion in the nasal passage, fever in some cases,
general body ache, head ache and/or fatigue.

In
Ayurvedic theory, cold is an ailment which is caused by the vitiation of Kapha which is the dosha representing water. This vitiation of Kapha can be caused due to the exposure to cold/humid conditions.

Another
reason of cold, which is quite prevalent in our lifestyle today, is related to
an individual’s digestion. Today, the types of foods that we eat can cause our
digestive system to become weak or irregular. This weakness/irregularity of the
digestive system leads to the food being left indigested in the intestines
leading to the accumulation of toxins, also known as Ama in Ayurveda. This Ama,
when it reaches the respiratory system can be the cause of the three forms of
cold mentioned above.

As cold
is a contagious disease, which can be either airborne or contracted through
direct contact with an infected person, a common precaution is for this ailment
is regular washing of hands, especially, before eating. Other precautions
include covering of the nose when going out in a polluted or cold environment
and taking vitamin C and zinc supplementation in the diet.

Ayurveda
also offers various remedies and treatments which can be helpful in the curing
of common cold and sinusitis. It is important from Ayurveda’s perspective that
one should take appropriate corrective measures in diet at the time of changing
season. Drinking hot water is one of the corrective measures which produce a
great deal of correction. It helps to digest the Ama (toxin) and clears
the congestion in the channels. It also helps to liquefy the Kapha dosha
and releases the respiratory channels. Ayurveda recommends that one should
avoid food products which are heavy to digest and also are of cold in nature. Curd,
rice, ice creams, banana etc. are the few such food products to be mentioned.
Inhalation of steam is highly recommended at the time of exposure to contagious
media. It helps to stop the progression of the disease. One spoon of honey with
few drops of ginger juice at night is a home remedy which helps to reduce congestion
and promotes per nasal discharge. Black pepper also helps in building immunity
of the respiratory tract.

Recurrence
of common cold and repetitive consumption of unwholesome food items can result
in chronic sinusitis or rhinitis. It may result in partial or complete loss of
olfaction, if not treated. Ayurveda Panchakarma treatments can help in eradicating these
problems from the root, and also helps in building immunity against such contagious
diseases. Seek the help of your Ayurvedic Physician to know more about the Panchakarma treatments and
healthy life style. Nature is the best medicine and a healthy life style is the
key to live a fulfilled life.

Ayurveda, a science of life
considers the health as a primary aim of life. To fulfill the four basic
purposes of life which are Dharma (the
duty) Artha (material gain) Kaam (to fulfill desires) and Moksha (Salvation),
health is an essential tool. Without a sound state of health none of such
purposes could be solved. For that matter, even any other purpose could not be
fulfilled, if any. Physical body has been considered as a building which stands
erect on a tripod of three essential commodities. Ahaara (food), Nidra (sleep), and Bramcharaya (celibacy) are these
three pillars of life.

It is important to understand the
sequence in which these three pillars have been mentioned. Ayurveda asserts a
great deal of importance to the food as one of the most essential contributes
to the health. It is sad that we do not pay any thought before eating and use
our food as an entertaining item of the life. Acharaya Charaka says, “Matraashi
Syaat.” It means that one should eat in appropriate quantity. Though, it is
difficult to exactly quantify the food in general because individual
requirement remains different, however one needs to realize his/ her own need. Contrary
to the general belief of eating specified number of calories, quantity of food
is directly proportionate to the physical exertion of an individual.

Consumption of food depends upon
multiple factors like,

Time of consumption

Quality of food

Type of the food

Processing of the food

Combinations of the food

Sequence of eating

Age and type of physical exertion of the consumer

Season

Coming back to the point of Matra (quantity) of the food, Acharaya Charaka says, “Ahaar Matra punah
Agnibala apekshani.” It means, quantity of the food which should be
consumed by an individual should depend upon the state of his/her digestion. Quantity
of the food that digests properly in stipulated time without harming the
constitution of an individual should be considered as an appropriate dosage of
the food.

Ahara
Matra (quantity of the food) also depends upon the quality of the food to
be consumed. Generally food items could be divided in two groups Guru (heavy to digest), and Laghu (light to digest). Guru Ahara could
be defined as the food item which takes longer time to digest even if consumed
in a lesser quantity. For example red meat, pork, fermented food products,
rice, black lentils etc. While Laghu
Ahara could be defined as food which is easy to digest and does not harm
digestive fire even if consumed in large quantities. Relevant examples of it
could be Moong Daal (green lentils), pop
corns, brown rice etc.

The idea of understanding this concept
is that one should consume heavier food items in a lesser quantity. Because being
predominant of earth and water quotient they tend to increase doshas in the
body. While lighter food items though gets digested easily, but predominance of
fire and air elements in them may increase Vata and Pitta dosha. Ayurveda
recommends that both of the qualities should be consumed in moderate quantity
in order to strike equilibrium among the trinity of the biological humors.

“The one who consumes food in
appropriate quantity enjoys a sound health, well nourished metabolic factors,
good complexion, contentment, and long life,” said Acharaya Charaka. Food consumed in proper dosage becomes an
absolute remedy to the health.

Ayurveda, an ocean of never ending wisdom states
that one has to plunge deeper to get precious pearls out of it. One can never
understand the essence of the science by fragmentary understanding of the
matter. It is a life of science, which is based upon self experiences and strong
observations. Ayurveda theory is based upon five basic elements of cosmic
evolution which are Ether (Akash), Air (Vayu), Fire (Teja), Water (Jala), and
Earth (Prithvi). These five elements join each other in different permutations
and combinations to evolve three biological forces called as Vata, Pitta, and
Kapha. They are the trinity of biological humors that regulate our body when in
equilibrium, and also result in diseases when get vitiated.

Biological humors coexist in the body in such a
fashion that they do not hinder each other’s functions and simultaneously
control each other in order to perform desired physical and physiological
functions. Being primary constitutive factors of the body, they are directly
influenced by our conscious or subconscious actions. Having said that means even
a smallest change in our life style has an impact over the positioning of these
Doshas. Trinity of Doshas also gets influenced by time and predominate each
other at different parts of the day and night. This natural fluctuation of
Doshas maintains our health and regulates our physiological routine. Ayurveda
explain it as Natural Biological clock.

If we divide 24 hours in day and night, individual
dosha has four hours of predominating cycle. Each dosha increases for four hours
during the day cycle and repeats the same during night. This cycle is directly
proportionate to the physiological performance of the body. For a better
understanding, this clock could be understood as,

In a Day cycle:

One needs to have a fair understanding of this
biological clock of the body to regulate the daily routine and maintain life
style accordingly. For example, at night cycle Kapha predominates between 6 am
to 10 pm. Kapha or adhesive force of the body is also responsible for inducing
sleep. Ancient wisdom recommends sleeping during this Kapha predominant phase in
order to experience a peaceful sleep. Once this time is elapsed, follows the
predominance of Pitta phase. Pitta also depicts enlightenment, awareness which
also suppresses the natural urge of sleeping. It makes the mind alert again,
even if you are physically sleeping or feeling sleepy.

Understanding your biological clock can help you
to deal with minor daily niggles with ease and helps to maintain a disease free

engage in learning new things, because “the true knowledge is a power, rightly

The rat race of our world is taking us away from our natural habits and pushing us towards a life filled with disorders which is directly related to our way of living. One such example is cervical spondylosis.
Traditionally, cervical spondylosis was considered a medical condition in which the degeneration of the inter-vertebral disks occurred due to old-age. However, today this condition is commonly caused due to regularly ignoring the ergonomics of our bodies, e.g., working for long hours with computers, wrong postures while performing day-to-day life functions, sports/repetitive injuries such as long hours of playing video games, texting etc. Spondylosis could be defined as the degenerative osteoarthritis of the vertebrae.
Based on the area of degeneration Spondylosis can be of various types:
· Cervical Spondylosis: The most common form of spondylosis, because of our stressful living, it includes the region around the neck column and is characterized by severe pain and/or restricted movement in the head, neck, shoulders, arms and hands.

· Lumbar Spondylosis: When the vertebrae of the lower back/lumber region are compressed, due to a repetitive injury or poor posture, this results in lumbar spondylosis. This form of spondylosis is characterized by pain in the lower back.
When the space between two joints reduces, it may generate a compression over the corresponding nerve root resulting in Radiculopathy characterized by referring pain, giddiness etc.
In modern sciences, there are two approaches, conservative methods or corrective surgery, through which cervical spondylosis is treated. The conservative approach is most common, involving treatments such as physiotherapy, massage, acupressure, acupuncture, patient awareness in correct postures, exercising, yoga, and/or non-inflammatory medicine. Surgery is recommended for patients who do not show improvement in their symptoms with the former approaches, however, it is still controversial.
The traditional science of Ayurveda approaches the treatment of cervical spondylosis differently. In Ayurveda, a healthy body has an equilibrium of the three doshas – Vata (Movement), Pitta (Change) and Kapha (Growth and Stability). Any disease is a direct result of the disturbance in this balance. Cervical Spondylosis is a condition which is predominantly caused due to vitiation in the Vata. It is related to Sandhigata Vata. When increased vata dosha gets localized in the Manya (neck) region, it produces dryness which results in excessive rubbing of two joints resulting in degenerative changes in corresponding joint.
Ayurveda recommends a comprehensive conservative line of treatment for managing cervical Spondylosis. As mentioned for Vata Vyadhi, oleation is the mainstay of the treatment. Internal and external oleation is recommended. For Vata Vyadhi, Basti have been mentioned as a treatment of the choice. It depends upon the understanding of an experienced Physician to plan judicious treatments for the management of degenerative changes of the spine. Hot fomentation using hot herbs helps to release the compression from the spine and restores blood circulation. Increased blood circulation to the area of inflammation promotes the recovery. Combination of physiotherapy along with Panchakarma treatments yields very good results. Physiotherapy also helps to restore the natural posture and decreases the chances of recurrence.
Alternative system of health and world’s most primitive science can create a world of goodness to the mankind if adopted with faith and patience. It is evident from the time immortal that quest of longevity is deeply inscribed in the mind of human beings and adopting a healthy life style including the freedom from life threatening diseases remained on the top of the agenda through out the evolution of mankind. When history was first written on the pages in form of a script, along with the furtive of evolution were penned down the secrets of healthy living for the references of ancestors. Vedas are full of such kind of wisdom. It was the time when such references were used and various parts of information were brought together in form of an authentic knowledge by some of our eminent sages to establish the holistic system of healing. As far the history concerned, Ayurveda is all about the wisdom arising from the constant observations and a science purely based upon the self experiences. The principle of five elements and theory of evolution are an example of strong metaphysical understanding of the mass. Induction of massage coating an example of moulding a strong wood with constant smearing of oil followed by hot fomentation is another excellent piece of mind application.

It was a discussion amongst some altruistic sages that brought out the best and the oldest system of medical fraternity who were worried about the decline of the social health around the globe. Acharaya Bhardwaj was the first among those who professionally started imparting Ayurvedic wisdom to his immediate descendant Acharaya Atreya, and the latter took an initiative to set up the first school of Ayurvedic Medicines. It is the time when Ayurvedic wisdom which was transferred orally until now took a form of written scripture. Agnivesha, a student of Acharaya Atreya framed his knowledge in form of a text and his work was upheld across the arena of intellectuals. He named his book as Agnivesha Tantra. Till date the book remains the main pillar of Ayurvedic wisdom and is famous by name of Charaka Samhita. It is mandatory to mention the probable time of this creation at this point, which dates back to astonishing 2500 B. C. back. Only the legacy of Agnivesha who is least rewarded for his work sustained the time and till date benefiting the man kind.
While the conservative system of medicines developed to its heights of success, at the same time land of snake charmers gave rise to another legend in the field of operative medicines – the Sushruta. With his excellent and mind boggling surgeries, he laid down the foundation of Modern surgery. He is the one to innovate the famous lithotomy position widely used across the globe. He again has the famous incision point under his belt for eye surgery, and no doubt why he is father of modern surgery today. It was his own legacy that he dared to successfully operate under the non availability of strong and reliable anesthesia. Both of the branches vis- a vis Ayurvedic Medicines and Surgery developed together and wrote a new script of success with a vision of futuristic social health. Later it was well carried upon by then gallant human beings, that by virtue of their hard work they laid a foundation of modern pharmacology and pharmacogonosy. It is the time of Acharaya Vagbhatta and other eminent sages, who went into the field of research and intensive pharmacological evidence in form of Nighantu and other texts are available till date. At the same time when other fields were developing in the field of traditional medicines, a new lease of idea gave birth to the development of alchemistry; a branch of medicine that deals with the study of metals and their property of healing. Mercury, the most poisonous metal was used to cure the life threatening diseases. None the less, this art was also used to create the lost wealth of then spend thrift kings by turning mercury into the Gold. Ayurveda, considered as Ashtang comprised of eight fully developed branches having their own specializations. The maestros of the field left back their footprints in form of their written scriptures on papers for their descendants, alas! Hardly could be restored and saved; thanks to the lack of print and electronic media, and also to the generations riding high over money making machines at the cost of their own health.
While knowing my own roots, I came across an interesting story about the name of Kangra town situated near to the famous hill station Dharamsala, it is also the abode of Goddess Durga – Bajreshwari. The place used to be called as Trigarta (valley covered on three sides by peaks) or Nagarkot. There lived a family who was engaged in the business of stitching the torn earlobes of the ladies fancying heavy metal rings. They were so good at the business that later the place itself came to be known as Kaan Gad in local language which means to stitch ear lobe. Due to the ease of pronunciation it became Kangra later. How true the story is, nobody knows but it left a great deal of impression on my mind about a family that had the courage and skill to change the fate of a dynasty.

A system that fulfilled the medical and social demands of man kind had its downturn not because there was a fault in the system but just political reasons were enough to destroy the wealth of the wisdom. Foreign invaders, wherever they came from had an agenda of destroying rich Indian culture and heritage. Nalanda University, then abode of the knowledge was set on fire which kept on burning for entire 6 months turning the knowledge into the ashes. Few of them took away the literature for their sake, and left a big lag. Even before that with up rise of King Ashoka, Ayurveda Surgery had to bear a major set back. Once the king turned Budha, all the surgeries were banned and anyone who practiced it was held responsible for prosecution. Many of the eminent personalities shirked their shoulders from the profession to avoid social embarrassment. Adding an insult to the injury, while British invaded India they slapped everything they had on India, and Indian culture
As the evolution rode over the fast track of development, and the world saw a major power shift from east to the west, India started looking tame in its own boundaries. Faster results produced by the western system of healing lead it to the top priority in the world of healing, and the lack of evidence based practice further pushed Ayurveda on the back foot. It was also the reason that developed nations refused to accept Ayurveda as a medical system and it ended up in a folklore practice only.
Also was the fascination of top authorities of this nation to please the developed countries and to keep dancing on their tunes that further deteriorated the image of this system and much of the credit goes to the practitioner of this science also, who felt privileged to be called upon Doctors instead of Vaidyas.
But, life is like a clock and the one that goes down has to rise in any circumstance. The might of Ayurveda could never be denied and the science that has the strongest basic principles rises again just like phoenix. The world realizes once again that being healthy is a bliss, and it is far better to maintain health than spending your hard earned money over an illness; and that is what the aim of Ayurveda is, “swasthasya swastha rakshanam i. e. to maintain the health of a healthy being.” Ayurveda, a science of life stresses upon adopting a healthy life style in order to avoid potential health hazards, and incorporates daily and seasonal regimens of well being, and one should always put constant efforts to follow the simple advises in order to remain healthy.
GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7595768255778640972.post-12852049308432922842010-09-12T23:13:00.001+05:302012-01-22T18:53:03.025+05:30Diabetes – a life style disorder
Ayurveda an age old science, explains this disease as Prameha wherein the prime symptom is excessive and frequent urination. As per Ayurveda Prameha is a disorder primarily related to the various abnormalities associated to the urination which further leads to a group of metabolic disorders(Prabhut avil mootrata). Diabetes- a Greek word that literally means fountain/ tap, was later associated to a disorder characterised by excessive production of the urine, there on a word mellitus was added to it which means honey. Sushruta- father of modern surgery explained the similar disorder much before the origin of modern medical science, and named it as Madhumeha. The word is made up of two words, Madhu – honey, Meha – Urine.

One can get the idea of similarity between two disorders explained by two different systems of medical sciences. Madhumeha is a disease in which subject frequently secretes a lot of urine (polyuria) with increased thirst (polydypsia) and associated with increased hunger (polyphagia). As per Ayurvedic methodology of diagnostics, it is decided depending upon clinical symptoms with a thorough urine examination. Charaka explained an easy methodology of diagnosing this disease based on a prodromal sign wherein ants are attracted to the urine of the patient.

Diabetes, which is generally considered as a life style disorder; caused by excessive consumption of unplanned and unwholesome diet associated with excessive sleep or non physical exertion, as per Charaka (Asya sukha, Swapna sukha…). By mentioning above causative factors Charaka might have predicted the modern life style which could be realized by prevalence of this disease in urban part of the world. Adding further to the list of causative factors, it includes excessive indulgence in the food which is rich in fat and quite heavy to digest for a prolonged duration, which is again a style icon of urban population which includes a fascination for junk food with carbonated beverages without much physical exertion. No doubt that Ayurveda also considers this disease as a genetic disorder (Beej Dosha). All such factors leads to vitiation of the Kapha (water metabolism) which in turn results in Prameha or diabetes.

Ayurveda classifies Diabetes in 20 types which actually emerge out of their individual dosha vitiation viz- a- viz from Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Sushruta being first to identify Madhumeha, which arises due to the predominance of vata dosha is a peculiar form of prameha in which sufferer frequently passes large amount of sweet urine and have been enlisted among the incurable diseases. Having said incurable, Madhumeha/ Diabetes comes under the diseases that need to be managed with continuous and through efforts through out the life span. It becomes incurable due to the involvement of all three doshas, meda, Rakta, Shukra, Ambu (water portion), Vasa, Lasika, Majja, Rasa, Oja (Sap of life), and Mamsa which are called as ten vitiated factors (Dasa dooshya). So it is extremely important for the patients, who think that swallowing a pill will cure their diabetes and they can eat anything and everything, to follow the proper dietary advice in association with proper exercise regimen.

From the point of view of treatment, Ayurveda classifies diabetics under two divisions, 1. Obese and strong, 2. Emaciated and weak. Category second is advised to be treated by improving their nutrition and lifting up their absorption level by judicious use of food supplementations and medicines. This kind of patient should be avoided for deep cleansing therapies until unless his general health condition is improved remarkably. While obese and strong patients should be subjected for the oleation (if necessary) and fomentation followed by deep cleansing by means of Vamana (induced vomiting) or Virechana (induced purgation). Once the through cleansing is achieved, patient is again kept on balanced diet to control the disturbed physiology.

Generally barley is considered to be helpful for maintaining and avoiding Madhumeha. Barley flour could be mixed with wheat and gram flour to be consumed in the form of baked bread. Fenugreek seed powder or sprouts can be used to achieve an additional effect in maintaining Madhumeha. Sushruta suggests a judicious use of Shilajeet to control Madhumeha. One must understand that Diabetes management treatment should be done under the strict supervision of a qualified Physician only and a regular check on Blood Glucose level is must. Chronic Hyperglycemia results in serious and long standing effects on other organs of the body and may also lead to Diabetic Neuropathy.

GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7595768255778640972.post-26241730817803329532010-09-02T22:07:00.001+05:302012-01-22T18:53:30.600+05:30Osteoarthritis – An Ayurveda Management
Osteoarthritis which is a common suffering these days could be compared to Sandhi gata vata from Ayurveda’s perspective. Though it is difficult to have a comparative study of two very different systems, but for the ease of understanding and to bring the best out of the two system for achieving a common a goal of curing the ailments, an integration is not a bad idea. Osteoarthritis is a disease characterized by a group of mechanical changes with the degeneration of joints. It is a prevailing disorder in old age people, wherein level of calcium degrades due to an effect of ageing, but other factors like life style, food habits etc. are also equally responsible for the prevalence of this disease.

Ayurveda describes a long list of causative factors responsible for Sandhi Gata Vata. As the name suggests, it is a disorder generated by excess Vata thus also known as Vata Vyadhi. Though vata vyadhi is quite a comprehensive term and it is a group of diseases created by increased Vata out of which one that affects joints specially weight bearing articulations is named a Sandhi Gata Vata. Meaning of word Sandhi is Joint or articulation.

Sandhi Gata Vata can affect any of the joint, but mostly large weight bearing joints like hip, knee and ankle are affected. Vata, which is a factor chiefly responsible for the mobilization in the body when increases in excess starts degenerating the body by means of its property of absorption. Symptoms of increased Vata can be viewed by signs of dryness over the skin, wrinkles, loosening of the joints, muscle wasting, poor strength etc. As per Ayurveda, causative factors responsible for the vitiation of Vata are, too much consumption of food which is dry in nature, and light to digest, to eat small quantity of meals which is insufficient for the body for a prolonged duration, too much involvement in sexual activities, to consume insalubrious diet, to wake up late night and to remain hyperactive and physically involved without taking enough rest. Chronic indigestion, malnutrition, excessive travelling are also few factors responsible for the vitiation of Vata Dosha. Trauma, excessive bleeding, chronic stress are also few other factors that increase Vata. Vitiated Vata when enters into the channels, it initiates many ailments related to Vata, and one of them is Sandhi Gata Vata.

Sandhi Gata Vata mainly represent symptoms pain and stiffness in the joint that may or may not increase with exertion. The joint makes a peculiar crackling sound while moved which is also called as crepitus. Swelling of the joint after exertion with or without the signs of inflammation can also be seen. Sandhi Gata Vata mainly affects spine, hip, knee and ankle joints which undergo a lot of wear and tear generated by body weight.

So obese people are at more risk of having osteoarthritis. Generally pain increases with cold and patient feels relieved by hot fomentation. Diagnoses can be established based on history and clinical examination. X- ray can consolidate the diagnoses and a typical OA(knees) X- ray film shows degenerative changes in the knee joint with joint space reduction and osteophyte formation in the joint.

Management of Sandhi Gata Vata from Ayurveda’s perspective is quite interesting and effective as well. One needs to rule out the involvement of the toxins (ama). Ayurveda reveals that sometimes Ama involvement with excessive Vata generates similar symptoms to the Ama Vata and could be quite confusing to diagnose, this state is called as Sama Sandhi Gata Vata. In such cases fasting remains the first line of action and it is necessary to bring it to the state of Nirama that is free from the toxin. There on line of action remains Oleation and fomentation to the joint, which could be done with the help of Panchakarma. Specific herbal oils are used for the purpose of oleation followed by fomentation with the help of herbal decoction prepared with the herbs that pacify Vata and also relieves the pain. Herbs like cida cordifolia (Bala), Gingiber offcinale (Shunthi), Cedrus deodara (Devdaru) are few that also helps in Sandhi Gata Vata. Food and nutrition is an aspect that can not be set aside while treating osteoarthritis. Life style needs to be corrected to achieve maximum result. It should be kept in mind that it is of utmost important to manage OA and if managed earlier it is better.

GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7595768255778640972.post-20678317247304921302010-08-31T19:22:00.001+05:302010-08-31T19:40:07.888+05:30Obesity – a problem of plenty
Obesity, that has a problem of plenty is growing rapidly across the globe. BMI can be calculated with the help of simple formula:-

BMI = weight [in kilos] divided by height [in meters] X height [in meters]

Body Mass Index weight categories and conclusion

BMI rating

Weight assessment

Under 20 (men)

Under 19 (women)

Underweight

Underweight

20 – 24.9

Normal weight

25 – 29.9

Overweight

30 & above

Obese

Management of weight is a more psychological game play than just following a regular routine. Causes of obesity are more attributed towards a sedentary life style and in certain cases due to a long standing illness for which patient had been treated with specific drugs. Family history, bad food habits, and genetic factors can not be ruled out too. But more often it has been seen that in the beginning patient does not take his/ her weight seriously and once the vicious circle of fat manufacturing starts in your body, it becomes difficult to reverse the changes.

Before going for weight reduction mental make up and a strong belief is utmost necessary. Crash diet course should be avoided strictly, they may result in sudden weight reduction but regaining of it also occurs at the same pace. It is advisable to calculate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) before deciding your diet. It is the minimum caloric requirement needed to sustain life in a resting individual. One can calculate his/ her BMR with the help of following formula:

For Women

BMR = 655 + (9.6 X weight in kilos) + (1.8 X height in centimetres) – (4.7 X age in years)

For Men

BMR = 655 + (13.7 X weight in kilos) + (5 X height in centimetres) – (6.8 X age in years)

Based on above calculation, one can calculate his/ her approximate daily calorie need.

Sedentary life style/ little or no exercise, calorie requirement = BMR X 1.2

Lightly active individual(mild exercise 1- 3 days/ week), calorie requirement = BMR X 1.375

Moderately active individual (moderate exercise 3 – 5 days/ week), calorie requirement = BMR X 1. 55

Very active individual (hard exercise 5 – 7 days/ week), calorie requirement = BMR X 1. 725

Depending upon your BMR one calculate the daily need of their required calories and accordingly fix their dietary needs. Though, one must understand that it is not absolute food that have been your enemy thus far but a proper check on daily schedule is also equally responsible for such a high rate of obesity. Late night parties and excessive consumption of alcohol with smoking are other factors also contributing to the urban obesity. It has been reported that number of obese patient are increasing at an alarming speed in urban livelihood. generation next life style and sedentary habits from the childhood are also adding on to the childhood obesity. Kids are more interested in computer games and lack of interest in games involving physical exertion leading to the disastrous health hazards. It is indeed very important to keep a close check on your weight at the time when it hits that important mark where daily wears stop fitting your body. And it is always better to stay fit rather than running from one store to another to find your size.

GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7595768255778640972.post-22386514566473722192010-08-30T21:36:00.002+05:302010-08-30T22:07:02.585+05:30Rejuvenation in Himalayas
Life in the metro getting hectic day by day, and daily physical involvement in meeting everyday new targets takes a toll on the body. But at same speed something very different is also happening on the back stage of physical realm, the spirituality. Gone are the days when spirituality used to be defined as spinning beads and going for pilgrimage. Also, over are the days visiting holy shrines in search of the peace. The new age philosophy is to find out peace within them. Though the same old forgotten science but realized at the right time. The time is ripe to segregate spirituality from religion.

One needs to understand the fact about the existence of God. Each and every holy book demonstrates the presence of the divine within oneself. It is a psychological realm of the higher being – the conscious. Age old philosophy of Sankhya, which describes the evolution of the universe based on two factors, the Mother Nature – phenomenal realm of the matter, and the purusha – the conciousness. Prakriti, under the influence of three qualitative forces with the stimulation of the higher conscious goes on multiplying for the manifestation of the physical world. purusha – the higher conscious is not a causative factor for evolution but the Prakriti. Under the influence of the physical boundaries, the conscious which is unattached and pure, believes itself to be the part of it only.

Moksha – the salvation is the process of realizing this pure consciousness in oneself, which is beyond the physical realm of the matter. Spirituality is a journey onto the path of self realization and it has nothing to do with any religion. Thus far by most of the people, spirituality was taught as a part of religion and it lead to lot of chaos than resolving the quest of the human being.

Today, the mantra is all about self introspection. Yoga helps in finding the tranquility of the mind which is the first step on the journey of the life. The word yoga itself defines the meaning – yujyate anena iti yoga, the factor responsible for the unanimity of the physical being with higher conscious. It helps in channelizing the energy to reveal the facts laying within one self. It brings back the energy of the cosmos to the primordial factor which is you, yourself. It has all the power of healing and can create wonderful result to an ailing body. Yoga is just not a part of your physical exercise, and it does not also limit itself to a specific religion. It is a practice to find you with in yourself only. The spirituality is not about finding god, but to find god with in you, and it is the essence of Indian philosophy; because, you are the god of yourself. This is the universal truth. The time is here to understand the Indian philosophy in its true self which is way beyond the saffronization of the books.

GA4P4ABVWZ4B
Ashutoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15271006505599510314noreply@blogger.com0
